Cujo (now Mimi)

Mimi our 12-year-old German Shepherd Female

Originally called Cujo, we use to meet her at Cantley Park. She was one of Jagger’s many girl friends they all fall over him. Last January when Jagger could still not walk properly after his two neck spinal disk operations at the Royal Veterinary College at Hatfield, seen lately on TV in Supervets, in November 2004. We took Jagger in our Campervan to see some of his doggie mates and their walkers at Cantley Park. Kay, my wife said Oh there is a Alsation heading straight for us, Jagger had been attacked badly in 2002 by a full male Alsation, I said do not worry look at their tails that is his favourite girl friend other than female Greyhounds. We were then told that Cujo, as she was called then, was about to be put to sleep as her owners stated that could not find her a home and they were leaving in three weeks time for the USA. Kay stated that was unfair and asked me to ask Dave, at Poplar Farm Kennels, if they had space to take her, Dave said yes but not for around four weeks. We told her owners and asked them to bring her to us the day before they were leaving, which they did including signing her over to PFK.

This meant we were having her for a week, but after three days of fostering her Kay said she is staying with us and not going anywhere else. PFK were very happy about this.

At that point we decided Cujo was not the right name for her. As we had already found out it was always “me first, me important”, we decided to call her Mimi.

Up to 6 months ago we had never heard her talk or bark. Now she talks to lots of the dog walkers that she knew in Cantley Park, and if they ignore her she will go amongst them and if still ignored will bark at them to get their attention. She is very protective of Jagger but lately as she knows her position is secure has started tolerating other females to come up to Jagger, she still does not like it if other dogs, apart from greyhounds, getting attention from me. Mimi adores other greyhounds, just like Jagger and me. If she sees Jagger has spotted the GSD that attacked him, she also stands and looks/watches it, also places herself between Jagger and myself, and that GSD.

There are a couple of very boisterous young (between 1 and 2 years old) dogs that bark and run and jump at people that Mimi thinks are teenage louts, so she barks at them very loud. Mimi if in the car or caravan gets very protective about her space from other dogs. Yet we have never had any problem between her and Jagger, she will not even try to sit/lay on his bed, but she has her own bed and Jagger never tries to sit/lay on that. Having had Mimi has helped Jagger’s improvement from his forecast on leaving hospital of a less than 5% chance of ever walking again to now being 85% fit, which is properly the maximum expected.

Today we took them both to the pub - The Jack of Newbury - we have been there quite a number of times so Mimi knows that it is sausage time. She gets very excited when we drive into the pub's car park. Today on entering the pub she was talking to everyone there saying Hello. Both Mimi and Jagger then go and lay down in front of the fire. They are both very good waiting for their sausages to cool off, there is no nagging whilst we have our lunch.

This story except for the last paragraph was submitted with photographs to the Sighthounds online general photo story and has won first place.
