Beware of Thieves

My thanks to Kaye from LURCHER SEARCH UK for providing the following text............

Dog thieves will target anyone, anywhere and any dog can be a target.

Basically they will get your dog if they want it badly enough - even if that means robbing you at knifepoint whilst you're out walking. It's not just people who keep their dogs in kennels who are targeted, here's some reports to illustrate some of the methods used.

bullet Left in car for a short while, window smashed and dog taken
bullet House broken into and dog removed
bullet 2 men broke into the house and stole this bitch plus LSB645. A white Ford Sierra (Reg. No. G668 VFW) used in the theft,   was found abandoned  in Yeovil, Somerset
bullet Stolen from outside a shop in Stapleton Rd., Bristol
bullet Taken from outside a shop by people in a white van (Reg. No. P653  WPW). Police cannot trace this vehicle
bullet Was removed from a white van belonging to friend whilst parked near a  bridle way
bullet Some Irish travelers tried to buy one of the pups, but the owner  refused. His back gate which is 8 ft. x 5ft. and extremely secure, was  sawn down the middle with a chain saw, to get at the bitch. Three black haired men, 25-30 years old, with Irish accents were seen at the  scene.......with a white van
bulletStolen from inside her home.
bulletStolen between 12.15-2.15 pm. Thieves have scaled a 6ft. padlocked and bolted gate in order to get in, and must have passed the dogs back over the gate to get them out. A white car was seen parked outside the house.
bullet Stolen from boarding kennels in Durham during the night. 2 teenage  boys with a black dog were seen loitering outside the kennels prior to  this dog's theft
bullet Stolen from farmyard in the afternoon. 2 local women picked up this  pup and another dog, thinking they were strays. 2 men then approached  and said they were their dogs, so the women gave them to the men. The  farmhand saw this from a distance and followed the thieves' car  halfway to Newark, when the thieves realised they were being followed  and then threw the older dog out of the car onto the road. The  farmhand stopped to pick the dog up and lost the car with the pup in
bulletWas stolen from outside a shop.....a collie was left behind
bullet Went missing from back garden
bulletStolen from a car at Frome Market at 10 am., along with a Greyhound.  The Greyhound was too nervous to go with the thieves, so was left behind.
bullet Stolen in a chrome horsebox with maroon wheels and cab. Could turn up  near Appleby. Stolen for coursing purposes and when slipped will run away from the slipper
bulletTaken from secure back garden between 1.30 p.m. and 1.45 p.m.2 other dogs were left behind in garden
bullet Stolen from outside a shop at 5.30 pm.
bullet Dog was stolen from out of locked back garden by a man with ginger  hair, who lead her out to a dark red Ford Transit van. Police & RSPCA  informed. dog adopted from RSPCA originally. certificate dated 23/11/2000
bullet Was stolen along with a white Transit "County" 4 x 4 van Reg. No H315 EHA

.....and there's loads more LAt the moment........more dogs are being taken from gardens when they've been let out to pee, than any other MO. Never leave your dog unattended anywhere!

Please don’t think this is only a problem for the Lurcher owner, ALL breeds are at risk.. Please be aware and take the security of you dog very seriously, it may not come back in one piece.  Micro chipping wont stop your dog being stolen but it greatly improves your chances of getting it back, dogs have been reunited with their owners years after they first went missing.  A microchip may also prevent your much loved pet being destroyed in a dog pound when the thieves abandon it. The same can be said of a tattoo, it may be old technology but more dogs are recovered via their tattoo than by a microchip and if you are in a high risk situation then Kaye's advice would be to do both.

“Please be careful out there”

Dave
